Microsoft may have ruled out a move towards the manufacture of mobile phones, but its chief executive has said some smartphone users can expect some extras in the future.
In an interview with CIO, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer said the company has plans for its Zune technology that go beyond its current range of mp3 players.
He said that "all content is going digital" and as a result it was important to make software and services available that were of use to the modern consumer market.
"What youll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to
Windows Mobile devices," he added.
Mr Ballmer added that Apple's reign over part of the market was not something Microsoft would trade for as this was only "a cult following in the music business".
A number of Windows-enabled mobile phones are currently available - including mobile phones from BlackBerry and Nokia.
