Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed that BlackBerry fans can expect a touchscreen handset later in the year.
According to Reuters, the company has said it will roll out the BlackBerry Storm at some point later in autumn and that the mobile phones will initially be available on Vodafone across Europe.
The news agency adds this will mean RIM has a handset that is in "direct competition" with the Apple iPhone 3G - which is expected to arrive on pay as you go tariffs before the year is out.
RIM's BlackBerry Storm will be equipped with a touchscreen that the manufacturers state will also depress slightly as it is used, with a "soft click" when the panel is released.
Company co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said in a recent interview that the click/touch screen was "revolutionary".
"This clickable interface is like an engineering marvel," he added.
RIM have posted a 3D image of the Storm on their website, with details of its full specification.
