Identifying laptops that are enabled with mobile broadband technology could be about to get a little easier, if a new scheme goes ahead.

The GSM Association (GSMA) has entered a partnership with a number of manufacturers, networks and other companies to introduce a new logo that will be applied to mobile broadband-enabled devices.

It is hoped that the initiative will see laptops, netbooks - and possibly mobile phones - branded with the logo, in a bid to get more people using wireless web services.

Michael O'Hara, chief marketing officer of GSMA, said that 16 of "the world's largest technology companies" were onboard with the scheme and that the consortium was committed to pushing the mark.

"The Mobile Broadband badge will assure consumers that the devices they buy will always connect – wherever mobile broadband is available – and that they can expect a high standard of simplicity and mobility," he added.

Telecoms.com reported earlier this week that Asus, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba were among the laptop makers who were backing the scheme.
