Europe challenges mobile recycling rules

Proposals have been made which could see the laws which govern the recycling of mobile phones, laptops and other electricals being made tighter.

Currently, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive), which has been in place since August 2004, is thought to be not doing enough to ensure technology is being properly disposed of.

This has led to the European commission coming up with a new set of guidelines that will force businesses and individuals to properly recycle mobile phones and other electrical waste.

Environment commissioner Stavros Dimas said: "As modern society increasingly relies on electrical and electronic equipment, it is very important th ...

IQ Booster, Pro-Bowling, Pool Star and Einstein's Brain Game are just some of the titles currently being mentioned and Damien Byrne, T Mobile's head of new proposition development, said this could just be the start.

New mobile shoppers advised on recycling handsets

When new mobile phones are required, the most environmentally-responsible move is to recycle your old ones.

According to a new article posted by Kevin Ferguson on the InformationWeek Green Computing Weblog, recycling mobile phones is now easier than ever.

Mr Ferguson states that having recently been forced to seek out a new BlackBerry, the decision to "recycle the old one" was a simple one to make.

However, he adds he has now been forced to consider the many other old handsets lying around his home.

"I have a drawer full of used cell phones that I keep meaning to recycle," he states, adding one is "the size and weight of a small dog".

Ofcom welcomes mobile roaming caps

Plans to reduce the costs involved with the international use of mobile phones have been welcomed by one expert.

A spokeswoman for Ofcom, the UK regulator for the communications industry, said EU plans to introduce a cap on what operators could charge for roaming were very welcome.

Elizabeth De Winton, communications manager for the organisation, said Ofcom had been lobbying for such changes for some time and added the group would continue to cooperate with international agencies to introduce the measures.

"In particular, Ofcom welcomes moves to tackle the practice of rounding up calls to the nearest minute for billing," she added. "We strongly support moves to curb this ...

BlackBerry Storm 'iPhone's closest challenger yet'

With Research in Motion (RIM) finally launching their first ever touchscreen handset on Vodafone, one website has taken the opportunity to put it to the test.

Trusted Reviews' Riyad Emeran states the BlackBerry Storm is the latest in a long line of models vying for the crown of the Apple iPhone 3G and notes that in terms of grip, the RIM model takes the lead.

However, he adds the Storm is heavier than the iPhone and is not in the same league as Apple's much-desired handset in terms of music and multimedia facilities.

Mr Emeran goes on to say other problems with the phone are a lack of Wi-Fi connectivity, a "temperamental accelerometer" and a less than adequate battery life - b ...
